Quickening at Saraste

Hi!

This is an illustration - and promotional concept art - for my book project called "Ordera". This is about a city at Nezca, which is a world beneath Ordera's sunny surface. These two worlds share nothing in common, they don't want to or don't believe in each others existance - until circumstances change this situation dramatically. Saraste's the name of former capital city of that dark world, before it was destroyed more than 400 years ago..
--

Please don't ask me when's the book's coming out, since
1. It's not in written in English but just in Finnish for now
2. It's not fully completed (but not like in Harry Potter-way, lol)
3. The full story of Ordera consists of 4 parts, I do my very best to get it out there in a language we all share best and that's English, but it's not easy and most certainly not done in a rush

Here you can see a version with a small chapter taken from the book, just to show a glimpse of the characters and what's happening here:

It's about the Mask Bearers, who just can't seem to be able to face each other despite being so close together.

I've always been very intrigued about masks in general, how people carry them in one way or another, some have them painted in gold, others with feathers, or metal, jewelry, dirt, blood, some looking like beasts or demons, heroes or even angels.
Have had my share of masks too, it's a tough job to get rid of them

Some extra backbone to the story behind it:

"Come what may, I shall not step aside.
Come what may, baby, sleep with a sense of desire.

Your each path leads to my castle,
each dream to my domain,

Each heart is a new life to feed,
and each love that cries, cries for me, in vain..

Look and be in awe, babe, yet these words are carefully chosen for you. I'm not the one who you should be talking to.

For nothing pierces through this armor,
no sunshine can overlay this oilblack shadow,

for my Brethrens are always here,
so never shall this soul get to heal..

never, since I've grown in a world of fear,

Where my face is always saluted, never judged,
always just as appraised, never before so welcomed;

so I can't retaliate, nor step aside, since my thoughts are shrouded as a mind divided.

And yet.. whenever you hear me call,
I call because my heart wouldn't forget,
to ask if you'd be the one to understand:

"I never wanted to place any bet."

Hi! For the first time in 5 years, I've painted a cyborg - and with huge thrill, since I really was impressed with Terminator Salvation and it inspired me greatly to do this piece. I found a big spark and some real meaning to do a work like this, since we all question our purpose in life every once in a while.. that may apply to artificial intelligence too. Some day we may wake up to see that the future is here as we've seen in all those apocalyptic films.. that future only depends on ourselves and what choices we make to prevent horrible things happening in the world.

This is made in one single day, mostly using vector pen, lasso and masks + of course brushes. Learned a lot again from fast working and enjoyed making this a lot.
gently floats Ra on his Sunboat as Vishnu cries over lands so dry,
blinded crows see no black and white,
as the Milky Way goes through this electronic night,
watching neighbour Andromeda
basking in a violent chemical radiant light.
Oh blue lotus;
the gentle breath of god,
don't let the boat of the Sun float too far,
we're awaiting on a shpere of dust,
wishing the world would never end at all."
Hope this complex piece will be interesting to look at and aspire your inspiration. It's a piece where historical leaders and modern faceless 'leaders' collide, sharing this massive home of countless workers, all hoping for the future to guide each of us to new stage of evolution.
A Good Dream II

One day's work over a pencil sketch. This is based on a dream I had recently and have seen that weird face before in a dream 2004 - truly!

I've attached some 'event stories' that have happened through the dreams I've had. Maybe someday it will make sense to me completely. Until then.. well, we'll see. Please, if you've had even remotely similar experiences with thses kind of long-term odd experiences, I'd really love to hear and talk about it
Ok, so here it goes:

Dream in 2004:

Thirsty and weak I led myself to a oasis,
there were buildings I couldn't recognize,
there was no Sun,
only a man with long legs, long arms, a small face under a hood, black and small eyes,
and he spoke to me.
”I'll treat you”, he said without moving his mouth.
I am mute and deaf without replies.
Stroking gently with his long fingers and wrapping me inside his arms he spoke again:
”Your Horse is weak, it cannot run very far. I'll give you another.”
He taught me to ride with Nature, we flew together as Hawks,
we rode for months and months,
until we arrived to a forest surrounded my mist.
The center glew and shone in the place what was so smooth and graceful by its plain surface,
and the surrounding silence was petrifying,
the Center circled by Emerald Green trees.
I had to unmount
and I was so disappointed I did.

--

Dream in 2008:

Three in the morning I woke up before the Dream.
In the Dream I heard the same voice, who I knew wasn't existing, but it said in a massive tone, like bass pounding under a giant wave of water and speaking in nothingness.
It said: ”Nothing ever even tries to end or die, things only change places and move from beings to another beings, as either negative or positive phenomenon.
All the ailments of a Man, which haunt him are connected to these forces which move in the world.
If you go towards the Noise, Disturbance and Control, you'll attract this Darkness and ”Evil” inside your House.
If you go towards Purity, Silence and extreme Carefulness and Preservation,
and to study all things inside yourself,
that Darkness shall stay away,
and all things shall be revealed by itself.

--

Dream in 2009:

I open and close doors, knowing that behind a certain door there's something unspeakable and horrible,
I keep closing doors as they open, I must close them each time so It won't come out.
But as I lock other doors, then some other unlock the same time.
Then It came out.
As black and formless as a coledust cloud, vague and transluscent which had no permanent shape,
but I felt its presence as clear as it had,
I had to avoid it in anyways as It approached me, so I ran away.
I woke up in my own bed, but still knew I was still dreaming, while I looked up and saw It coming through my front door. Once again I was paralyzed, I couldn't say a word.
It had followed me from another time and another place,
as It stopped for a moment in the doorway, as tall and dark with that bright small face which had no expression, just a stare of immence force.
It rose up from ground and became a shadow, swooping pass my left shoulder, through my body without any pain or touch,
and It was gone.

Then I really woke up.
At nine o'clock in the morning, half an hour later when taking a shower,
I saw four red marks on my left shoulder.
I trid to copy them by pressing my fingers on those places and create the same pressure marks,
but it didn't work. The marks were round and clear by their borders and they weren't hurting at all. After two hours they disappeared.
I never got explanation for this.

But I only wait for more Dreams to tell me.

Hello! My latest personal painting. Below is the description which I hope explains many things in the image. Rest of it I hope it brings up some thoughts and comments. I understand very well if you're feeling unfomfortable looking at it. But the more interesting is to know why.
There's a tutorial coming up this week about this piece, going to put it first to my website, so you'll see how all this came together. Stick around =)

Traveller's Guide:

”I am a man of many faces. I am the Sun's Son, the one which cannot be gazed upon without blinding pain, I am the voice who commands brotherhoods of Greed, Agony and Lie. I am the blade of deceat, devourer of life, my wings are black as midnight, you can see me soaring as the Eagle Eye over all land and sky, witnessing time and all fates passing by. Now answer; who am I?

--

Loyal servant, the blessed one amidst the grey; Listen to the very words I speak to you: "You must give me swords, give me chants, give me the dream of an untouchable romance. Look above you, and I shall look you back, among the dancing stars is where I was born once upon a time. The story runs deeper than you know, my boy.
I sleep alone, naked and unfold, I have no shields around my soul. I am mortal, nor I am not, but I am born from each and every shout. Praise my beauty, remember these eyes, here I stand before you, without alibies. Without you I am nothing, but with you I shall rule everything.
Your love for me is the perfect sin, and that is how I rule - from outside and from within. Nothing less, nothing more, for that is the nature of my diamond soul."
- Come Dream -

"Come my brother; come my dream.
Let's grab these old bones and hold our hearts up high once more.
Meet me at Heaven's forest,
there I wait, there I keep my timeless blade.
Flocks of old ghosts gather like children,
praising words of wisdom they say
and they gnaw,
for the life they lost is forever gone.

Come o' brother famine,
come o' brother death,
come o' brother despair,
come o' brother pain!
Let's share a living dream and be as one,
as we once together loved this place,
where heroes met and danced in the night,
and Moon gazed upon the glorious lands,
and all heroes bathed in its light."
It's obvious to say this is a big scene.. I hope all who watch it can feel themselves inspired and this invokes plenty of thought, good or bad, disgust or pleasure.
--
For a personal view, this is a very strong piece for me. I'm not a religious person, but I find all religions most interesting especially when thinking about the known characters.
On the upper left, there is arch angel Samael, he's said to be the angel of war. Upper right there's Gabriel, the angel of Death, with everlasting depressive expression on his face and a huge unique scythe in his hands.
The middle angel is the Morning Star, most controversial "person" of them all, in my opinion at least. But he's what everyone wants and everyone needs and feeds from, the first and last, beginning and the end. And he's empty and heartless.
--
And finally there's this individual who falls alone amidst all of the pain and anguish of the chaotic world. What happens to her remains to be seen..

I hope you like it and of course crits & all kinds of feedback are most welcome!!

Hello,
Here's another "quick" personal painting of mine. Started it last Monday and now it's happily done. I found some interesting sketches from the depths of my harddrive, hehe, and wanted to do something about them.
--
The two are painted in PS and smoothed up in Painter, but mostly just in PS. The backgound is combination of couple of dark photos from my backyard, it served some good textures that fit the piece nicely.
--
These animals are for real, they are actually called red pandas, or lesser pandas. I'vehad a soft spot in my heart for them since I was veeery little so just couldn't help myself for doing a tribute for these wonderful creatures. They are also highly endangered species these days and needs a lot of help to survive.. back in the 60-70's, people took the wild pandas as pets because of their kind and non-aggressive nature. So the result is that wild pandas are nowhere to be found.. they only mate ONCE a year in just one day. Believe that?
--
As you can see, I have some passion for this piece.. .. hope you like it too!
Depending of perspective, Death can be very frightning and painful, like a cold breath above you in a time of hurt. When heart is burned out and body has grown too weak to go on, She can ease your thoughts, if you let her. But sometimes Death only comes for a quick visit. Maybe to give you a push, writing you a new name to begin again.
This scene takes place to a underground world called Nezca, which is ruled by the dark race of sentinis. They have enslaved a noble people of shawans. The battle between these races and their minions and survival affects also to the upper world of sunlight. Finally the cultures of new and old, magic and raw power and creatures of dark and light have to all face each other in a common battle for truth and justice.

Hello

Updated this pic today 26th of February. Corrected his swordhand and adjusted the lighting and refined some details.
--
Hell has always fascinated me, ever since I read the marvelous "Season of Mists" from Sandman by the Mastergenious Neil Gaiman. In my imagination it's a place of fear and lost, humility and pain, hope and hopelesness. And also it can be a place of extreme sacrifice and courage.. I've dreamed of making a huge fight scene in Hell with all kinds of detailed grotesque stuff, so let's concider this a preview for what's to come later.. maybe..!
--

Here's the actual story for this:
__

"He walked through thousands of mazes, climbed over heavy and high stonewalls and longest stairs of echoing sadness, only his evergrowing shadow behind him.

--
Every sound and step he took reminded of her laughter, just to increase the love he felt for her. It was the sound of spring, the warmth of sun and all that he knew as precious and dear in this world. Never he had a day of tears with her. The colours she showed him at the time when days seemed to have the cruelest shades of grey and covered in darkness were like discovering himself all over again.
--
But now she was gone. Just like a breath fades into thin air she was cast to Hell, for the crimes she did and kept unsaid.. safe and locked within her heart.
--

Strike me down, for I will cut through the fifty walls of concrete and stones of darkest pits and rooms of torment, fall down and bleed until there is no more blood to shead... I shall get you back.
--
As she was found, all that lively spirit she once were now were like a dry oasis in a hot desert... almost as dead and fragile as a leaf.. her skin was grey and withered as burnt paper, torn and ripped apart for countless of times. She bit her own lip as she tried to speak with her demonish sharp teeth.

--
But he did not care for her appearance, for he would get her back. In her eyes he could still see the spring and the sleeping sun.

--

Ok, Hope you'll enjoy this work, had so much fun in creating all those details. Oh, and all done in CS2 from scratch. Used only one photo (from Mi-3) reference for the pose of the two, but then put it away as soon as that was sketched out.

Here's some close-ups. I think they are needed to show exactly how many things happen in Hell at the same time....

--

--
His sword was blessed until it worn out.. I think it reminds a lot like Soul Calibur's sword, don't you think?

--
Demons love to make a mess and pick on each other and also they are very enthusiastic to make bets about fights. A Firecentaur missed his shot and now the other guy has his chance to strike back. Demons kill each other easily, but that's what demons do, lol.

--
The hot air burnt his eyes and his mouth got so dry that it was hard to swallow. She felt the beating heart against her chest and didn't believe to be worthy enough to be saved, already he r body had gained the form of a demon and was forgetting her former self.

__

There are countless ways to punish the souls who come to hell in their afterlife.. This man was the captain of his ship and misused his authority in terrible ways and let his fellow men suffer while he lived his life with riches and abundance. Now he has to jump 13 times in a day from the peek of mountain and serve his crew.

--
That's a lantern-scorpion. One of the very few light bearers and small bugs of Hell.. Mostly only light comes from the hot lava currents flowing throughout the place. These critters prey using their light to lure those who are attracted to shiny targets.

--
And there are also wraiths and undead warlocks flying around in the air.

--
These statues are a symbol for resentment the Ruler of Hell feels. The dark angels pour more lava into the endless pits and only observe how it burns those who get wet by it.

--
Ok that's it. Thank you for viewing and comments are so welcome!!

I could write a book about how this was made, and another book about the story! Hehe.. ok, let me just say that the bg is a place I visited last years October and took loads of great photos there (if somebody knows it, I give him/her a big hand and an ice-cream with strawberries).
--
Then I now combined and modified the pics heavily, re-coloured and someways painted some places over. Had so much fun doing that! All other things are painted only in CS2.
--
I started this work as an attempt to do a matte painting practise, buuut.. you know how it can easily go to another direction... And I'm a person who craves a story in every picture I produce so just couldn't settle with only a landscape scenery.
--
Alright about the story... (It's from my unfinished book called 'Ordera')
--
A young emperor is fatally wounded by his own people while stopping them killing the boy who flies one of the feared 'equu dragni''s. He manages to escape with the hurt emperor, to desperately seek out the one person who can help to save him.
--

Hope you enjoy looking this and comments are most appreciated. Here's some close ups.

Hello! This is my first submission to CGSociety. I wanted this piece to represent a feeling of sympathy and affection regardless who's showing it, and how the man's best friend never judges anyone based on appearance. I used Painter and PS.
I'm interested critique about the lighting and painting style in general.
Thanks for viewing!
He has soooo much attitude and respect that he rarely has to lift a finger to gain control of his opponent. Though he has gone through a lot before, for he has that one blind eye and some nasty-looking scar tissue forever reminding him of his flaws.

Idea is a traditional portrait of a very significant person from somewhere else than this world.. at least I haven't seen anyone looking exactly like that so far
Hope you haven't either?

Took a bit over two days to complete. Had to play some Metroid 3 in between, hehe..
As usual, all done in CS2 and Painter Essentials 3.
All comments and crits are most extremely very welcome

Dream country - speedpainting

About 3 hours, did it last night. You ever wonder how your subconcious constantly fights against your past demons as you dream? When you wake up, light fills the room and you're so glad that they are in the past and you know it's always just a dream. But sometimes the demons just keep climbing back up, ripping their long teeth and claws into you and your spirit and takes you over.
And no matter how hard you fight against them, they just won't die. They laugh until you give up on them. Frightning thought, isn't it?

I was looking for some weird and kind of twisted perspective on this, but not in a drastic way. The feeling of despair and strange atmoshpere like looking through some lens that's too odd to describe...

Hi there,
this took about 8 hours or so. Mostly time was consumed by that little flying thing who just couldn't accept the wing choices I tried to offer him. But now he's ok with them and flying happily.. hehe --
This image came out as a simple building and perspective practise, but then I thought it would also be a nice illo for my (if it ever finishes) book. So, this place is called "Sirad Nox", a vast and terrifying city with enormous walls surrounding it. It's risen from underground here and takes it's first glimpse of sunlight, only to diminish it in an instant to grey and cold in it's vast shadow.
Done in CS2.
Crits and comments are most welcome!!
--

So I painted this entirely in Photoshop in about 5 hours. I wanted to study a striking perspective and strong colours, Please let me know what you think?
A big thanks for the inspiration goes to a very good artist comrade Matt Bradbury, who made someways this kind of image about half a year ago... Just had to try it out myself but with a different angle.
--
I like to work in wide perspectives when I do fast picts, it gives a lot of room and movement that's different with vertical space.
Hope you like it, so I leave it for you to comment on

Thought I make Chiysaki a little bit further, since the first version of her got some problems with her hip. Also made her personality come more forth. Hope you like it!
So, this is a commission character painting for Black Halo Entertainment. She is a figure of a novel series "World of Chi", written by Lewis Walker. Black Halo's site opens this September, check it out then!
